Between Santa Monica and Oxnard runs a 47-mile stretch of California coastline along Pacific Coast Highway 1. In the early twentieth century, it was a private dirt road the Rindge family used to reach their Malibu ranch. After a long fight to keep it private, it opened to the public in 1929 as the Roosevelt Highway, later renamed the Pacific Coast Highway.

This painting looks north up the road near today's Will Rogers State Beach, back when a lighthouse still stood along the shore.
